Benzodiazepine drugs such as diazepam, lorazepam or valium are normally prescribed for short periods to ease symptoms such as anxiety or sleeping difficulties. Sometimes the symptoms users are left with after long-term use can be worse than the symptoms for which they were originally given.
There is a risk that users can become dependent on these drugs if they are taken for more than four weeks. This will furthermore bring the issue of withdrawal symptoms once the use of these drugs is ceased. Such symptoms may include panic attacks, feelings of unreality, sweating, insomnia, headaches, palpitations, muscle spasms, oversensitivity to light and in some cases convulsions may occur.
It is most common for the process to be completed by slowly reducing (tapering) the benzodiazepine over time. Additional medications may be prescribed to address any symptoms that may occur as a result of this tapering.
